Recently, I became aware of a population of unsheltered people in our area.

When I read this I was really shocked…
Wikipedia explains the term “Unsheltered ” as
The “unsheltered” are that segment of the homeless who do not have ordinary lawful acess to buildings in which to sleep, as referred to in the HUD definition as persons occupying “place not designed for … sleeping accommodation for human beings.

There have been a signifigant number of unsheltered persons expiring of hypothermia, adding impetus to the trend of establishing warming centers as well as extending the enumeration surveys with vulnerablity indexes.

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.
– Mother Teresa

Homelessness
On any given night in America, anywhere from 700,000 to 2 million people are homeless, according to estimates of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty.

Area of emerging interest:The Unsheltered

The “unhoused” are that segment of the homeless who do not have ordinary lawful acess to buildings in which to sleep, as referred to in the HUD definition as persons occupying “place not designed for … sleeping accommodation for human beings. Such persons frequently prefer the term “houseless” to the term “homeless”. Recent homeless enumeration survey documentation utilizes the term “unsheltered homeless.” HUD requires jurisdictions which participate in Continuum of Care grant programs to count their homeless every two years. These counts have led to a variety of creative measures to avoid undercounting. Thus teams of counters, often numbering in the hundreds in logistically complex volunteer efforts, seek out the unsheltered in various nooks and crannies.

h1>Budgeting and saving are two big questions for senior women.

Living on a budget is one of the keys to your financial freedom, but how do we do this, especially with this economy in 2011?

In winter especially, fuel bills have become higher and higher, taking up the money that used to be used for savings. It’s easy to want to throw up our hands in disgust. But, all is not lost.

Here are 5 tips to help you save in 2011…

1) Cut back the little things.
You may be thinking that a few dollars here or there every month won’t make a difference, but it does. When you cut back in small ways, it could mean a lot more money at the end of the month.

2) Stop wasting.
This can apply to every area of our lives. From eating out to home heating, waste equals money going down the drain unnecessarily.

3) Cook for your family. Eating out or ordering take out eats up your cash in a hurry. Or, worse yet adds to your credit card bill.

4) Insulation has certain standards that need to be met. Call your insulation installer and ask him to check the insulation in your home.

Achieving Balanced Health

Achieving Balanced Health

Achieving natural balanced health quickly and easily can be well, quickly and easily.

Every day you hear of two or three new health foods that flood the market and offer little or no support to your health.

They claim superior benefits but little balanced health information.

Bookstores stock books about good nutrition, and fitness, grocery stories stock super foods. These are advertised as necessary items but really, just how many of them are needed to keep you healthy and fit?

Let’s take a look at the exotic sounding foods that are promised to keep balanced health.

Have you heard of Acai berry? You would almost have to live under a rock not to have heard of this one. Another one you may have heard is green tea. These and other foods go and come as exotic because they have different sounding names and you see them constantly in magazines and on TV.

Do they work? Sure they do to some degree, some better than others. The proof is that when the excitement for these foods wan, another food will come to take its place, since the benefits of exotic foods are overstated, orders pour in, increasing the demand, pushing up their prices until you are sold on the idea that they are necessary for balanced health.

The Fad Foods
No matter what your age, you like to have a good figure, want tight abs, and your body to feel light, look healthy, younger and energized.

Is there something about the fad foods that theyare not telling us? When someone appears on TV looking slim and trim after losing weight the first question asked is how did she do that? It may be her diet but more than likely it’s many regimens maintained to the point that she has balanced health. Balanced health is not achieved with filling your body with fad foods.

Eat, exercise and rest for balanced health

The natural food and exercise you do provide for yourself is intended to keep your good, balanced health for years to come.

Eat a variety of foods. All food is good if the person eats variety and strives to maintain a balanced diet. Food grown in every region is sufficient and balanced for the needs of the people living there.

Just one word about exercise, if you are able to get outside, then go there to walk. Just yesterday afternoon, there were many people at the park enjoying the lake, walking with family or pets, relaxing and relieving their stress. All exercise is good but you have to know how and be willing to use it correctly for it to help you have balanced health.

In a nutshell good balanced health will be obtained quickly and easily as we take the time to use variety, and common sense with our eating and exercise.

I would love to have your comments!

Here’s to your good balanced health,

No Bad News Here

No Bad News Here

I’m sure that all of us are unindated with the bad news of natural disasters and wars that are being fought in several countries.

How do you handle the bad news?

Here are 9 ways to get past the bad news and have your spirits lifted.

1) Turn off the TV 24 hour news stations. So much emphasis is put on “the commentator” when really all they have is their opinion and facts that seem to make us think their opinion is the only that is true.

2) Read the comics in the daily news paper, read the gardening news and local events to find something you can do to get out of the house.

3) Don’t take life for granted. Live each day to the fullest.

4) “Live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment” Henry David Thoreau

5) Think about the love you have for family, and live and express your love as if it were your last day.

6) Volunteer, there are many people that it would mean the world to, if you helped serve a meal, cut someone’s hair, sat with a loved one that is not feeling well and many more things that can be done just because you want to. Not expecting anything in return.

7)

The American Cancer Society has a program called “Look Good Feel Better.” No Bad News here

This is for women especially, and they are given a large red patent leather bag, with all kinds of cosmetics, they then are taught how to use the cosmetics when they are on Chemo or Radiation treatments. Finally the cosmetologist shows them how to tie their scarfs and wear cute little hats. To volunteer for this program leaves you with so much caring for others that it’s hard to feel depressed when you leave them.

8) Keep a gratitude journal. Only things you are grateful are recorded in this journal. Go out and buy a beautiful journal, because gratitude deserves to be written on a beautiful page. No recorded bad news here either.

9)

Be so busy living and leaving your legacy that there is no place in your life for bad news.

Think about the legacy you want to leave.

Are you retired and wasting your time?

Writing About Time

Writing About Time

The anniversary of my retirement is coming up soon and I’ve been thinking about the time that I waste.

It seems there are so many ways to waste time these days. Here are a few…

1) Talking with friends when you have a long “To Do” list.

2) Checking and reading e-mail several times a day.

3) Watching TV.

We all have things that we enjoy that could be considered as wasting time to others. It’s important to have an escape valve, someway to unwind. Escape valves can easily become a habit that keeps you from more important activities.

Here are some solutions and tips to stop wasting your time and become more productive.

1) Talking with friends when you have a long to do list…
I’m not saying not to have friends, family and former co-workers that you chat with. Often it’s those around us that may not have focused activities at this time in their life. Maybe they want to speak with you about a mutual friend that has become ill, or a wonderful vacation and the list goes on and on and on.

My suggestion would be to come up with ways to tactfully say you must go, you have an appointment and you are still in your robe (If it’s true.) Others may become a little pived if they don’t receive all the time from you they want. But, what about you? If you do talk as long as some want , you are the one that is missing out.

2) Checking and reading e-mails, Twitter or Facebook several times a day is very time consuming.

Is there really anything in those e-mails that can’t wait until you are finished with more important activities?
My suggestion would be to set a timer for 15 minutes and when it rings, get up, and work for at least the next 45 minutes.

3) Watching TV…

There are many worthwhile and interesting programs that we all love to watch, such as HGTV and the Food Network, or Opera or Dr. Phil. Some even spend great amounts of time each day watching the News channels. It’s so easy to look at the clock and say I’ll take the time to do a chore when this program is finished. But, another program is on next and it doesn’t take long to eat up several hours. Use the timer again, and don’t come back to watch TV for several hours. This is a good time to exercise, go for a walk, garden or any number of other things you like to do.

Think about your most productive time each day.

Is it morning, afternoon or are you a night owl. Plan your day to work on things you least like to do first, when that’s accomplished you can enjoy the good feeling that accomplishments bring.

A short power nap in the afternoon can provide energy for the rest of your day.

Retired? Wasting Your Time

It was not that long ago that dating for senior women was, to a large extent, taboo.

People were considered quite old when they reached the age of sixty. Those over sixty could be swept under the proverbial rug. In today’s modern world this is not the case. Seniors are more than ever staying fit and active.

Add to that the major advances in nutrition and medicine and senior women are living a high quality of life as they get older. When compared to previous generations, senior women of today are much more vibrant and vital.

Are you about this age and looking for dating with a romantic partner?

Dating

Dating a Senior Man

As Wendell K. Cribbs, the renowned internet author and relationship expert, states “no matter how old we are, dating and relationships are vital to a happy personal life and a positive mental attitude. We need to foster intimate relationships, in spite of any anxiety or fear, and, regardless of our age. In fact, the majority of feelings of hesitancy are not based on fact or actual experience, but are rather contrived within our own mind.

Over sixty dating isn’t something anyone has to be afraid of.

To be sure, senior dating can be both fun and exciting. As we near retirement age, many of the problems faced by the younger generation that are dating, are not much of a concern for seniors.

Choosing a career, starting a family and many other issues just don’t get in the way. That’s one of the main reasons why over sixty dating can be more relaxed and not have as much pressure attached to it.

Just as in any phase of our senior women’s life, there will be good times and bad times. Trepidation and nervousness will be there at some level associated with dating again.

All of this is reassuring for any senior woman that wishes to establish a new and potentially loving relationship through over sixty dating. As the poet once said, “life is how you make it”, and that’s true no matter how young at heart you are.

What are the foods to eat to stay healthy?

Good health is so very important at this time in our lives, but do we really know the foods to eat for good health?

Here are suggestions to help you become stronger and keep your good health.

1. Do not fall for fad foods.

If they were true food, they would have stayed on the market.

Keep a good attitude about food.

The preference of one food group over the other keeps our systems unbalanced.

4. There are only two types of food in nature

One is food for nutrition, the other is food for medicine and healing

5.  Eat everything in moderation

I want to invite you to make a consecrated effort to make learning about health foods, vitamins and minerals to continue with your good health.

When I opened my e-mail this morning this headline came up. “Pantone Announces Leading Color for 2011.”

Since I like to know these kinds of things I couldn’t wait to see what color it is… Drum Roll, Please…

Honeysuckle

I grew up on a farm and we didn’t have honeysuckle this color, ours was more of a soft pink and yellow, but the fragrance was almost overwhelming.

As a senior woman, I’m glad to see this bright color, here is some info taken from the Pantene web site.

“Each December, designers from all aspects of the industry await Pantone’s color of the year announcement. As the global color authority and provider of color standards for all areas of the design industry, Pantone’s selection influences product development and design decisions in fashion, home and industrial design.

For 2011, the color of the year is honeysuckle, a warm pink that straddles the line between coral and poppy red. Since pink is one of those shades that you either love or loathe, it’s no surprise that honeysuckle was met with mixed emotions from the design community.”

It has an uplifting quality that Pantone’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman says will elevate our spirits in times of stress. “Honeysuckle is a captivating stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going — perfect to ward off the blues.”

As an accent color Honeysuckle can be used for an unexpected bright spot, and it can be used in bathrooms, in art work and it looks good with silver and white.

Used as a throw it immediately makes one cheerful, just by snuggling under it. In womens clothing it gives a beautiful glow on one’s face.

In paper products can you imagine a better color than Honeysuckle for a new baby girl’s birth announcement?  Or even lamps and tea towels.

This color appeals to my feminine side and I like it just because it makes me happy when I see it.

“Success doesn’t just come to you – you have to go get it” is a quote from Marva Collins.

I want to use it in today’s post to remind us that we’ve always worked hard and now that we are becoming senior women it’s very important to keep a positive frame of mind and our eyes on success as senior women.

Many older senior women were brought up believing that her own personal happiness and wants were just as important as anyone’s – maybe even more important. We were not prepared for the demands of husband, home and families. The difference in our early upbringing and reality was quiet a shock.

Of course we wanted our husbands, home and families, we just didn’t want to give up on personal dreams. In many cases we waited until we were near retirement or retired before we would enjoy these freedoms.

So, now that we’ve become, in many cases, senior women with a great deal of expendable income, how will we manage our time and our resources?

Just as we think maybe we have it made, we have revolutionary and swiftly changing events that affect the way we live. A shrinking globe, technological advances, threats of war and great weapons have made our lives seemingly beyond our control. Life has changed so fast and taken so many – and often conflicting – directions that traditional ways of thinking are in a state of transition.

All of a sudden life as a senior woman may not be all that we thought it would be. My question to you is how do we intend to reach this successful senior woman goal?

1) Become active in your community. There are many organizations from the Rotary Club to feeding the hungry to participate in.

2) Stay in touch with old, as well as new, friends and co-workers. In other words, people that you have a great deal in common with.

3) Travel and see the places of your dreams. If you are single, find someone that you are compatible with and see the world.

4) Find a hobby or extend a business that has been growing, just waiting for this time in your life.

5) Participate in a spiritual group.

My point is that we as senior women should use our time and resources to encourage others and at the same time enjoy the good times we’ve planned for.

Just remember that success doesn’t just come to you – you have to go get it – be constant in your efforts in going to get success. Even in this stage of our lives it’s important to be successful in what ever we do.
